Hello readers! Christmas is approaching fast and I started feeling the pressure of decorating my space in the coziest, cheapest way possible. This year, I decided to document my process in crafting budget-friendly DIY Christmas decorations this year in case anyone is looking for any new ideas.
As a young adult, my budget is super low. I stand by the fact that everyone deserves to have a cozy, comforting space that makes them happy and brings them joy regardless of their budget. These DIY decorations are wallet-friendly and easy to make, I hope these ideas make your holiday season prettier!
1. Holiday Garland
Things you need:
-
- Green/Red/White fuzzy garland
- Beads
- Fairy Lights
- Curtain Rod
Place your fuzzy garland on the curtain rod and wrap the beads in and out of twisting through the garland. Wrap the fairy lights around the rod and hang it up. Voila! A super simple pretty holiday garland achievable by a total Non-DIYer.
Total cost: $12CAD shopped from Dollarama, everything except the curtain rod was a new purchase.
2. Christmas Village
Things you need:
-
- Access to a thrift store!
- Tea lights
Christmas villages are so adorable but brand new sets can be very expensive. I visited my local Value Village and picked up the cutest set. I had to look around different aisles to get what I wanted but I got really lucky with this find. I found a little burger stop, sweet shop, bookshop, old mill in, and church for my village. Everything is covered in snow and super cute.
The second part of this display was getting the tea-lights. Dollarama came to the rescue again and I added these tea-lights to my village to light it up.
Total cost: $30CAD for the village and $3.99CAD per two pack of tea-lights.
3. Twine Curtain Tie-Backs
Things you need:
-
- Twine
This one is super simple. All you need is… twine! I cut little strings of twine and made a simple bow knot from the little strings to tie them around my curtain. It looks really cute and is a minimalistic, low effort decor idea for people who want to keep it simple but cute.
Cost: $2CAD roll of twine from Dollarama
4. DIY Christmas Ornaments
Things you need:
-
- Cardboard boxes/Ready-made plain ornaments
- Paint Pens
- Glitter, Crystals, Ribbons, Stickers (optional, customizable)
I love this holiday decoration idea because not only is it super cheap, it is super customizable. I bought a pack of these wooden ornaments from Hudson’s bay for $4 and used Dollarama glitter pens and paints to decorate them. Do not worry if you are late to the sales, you can find cheap plain instruments at a dollar store or on amazon. Alternatively, the lowest cost option is to trace whatever shape/design you want on cardboard boxes you have lying around and cut them out. You can now use these as blank templates to decorate!
Cost: $4 CAD for the ornaments and $10 for paint supplies
These are all the decorations I used for my place but there were some ideas I was toying with but did not end up doing due to time constraints. I would like to give them an honourable mention below with some tutorial links in case anybody wants to try them out:
Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
